NAPIT TA welcome Government’s response CLG report

NAPIT TA welcome Government’s response to CLG Select Committee Report but say more could be done

Frank Bertie, Chairman of the NAPIT Trade Association, commented on the recent Government response to the CLG Select Committee report Building Regulations Certification of Domestic Electrical Work [1], saying:

“It is very positive to see that the Government is supportive of the creation of one consumer facing mark and register for all Full Scope Part P registered, competent electricians. Registered Competent Person Electrical will launch on June 30 and has the potential to provide a significant boost to consumer awareness.

“We also welcome the Government’s commitment to discuss with the industry whether any changes are needed to the current arrangements in England to ensure robust supervision of electrical work.

“The NAPIT Trade Association are committed to working with the Government to ensure that all electricians are, at the very least, genuinely monitored when carrying out electrical work in the home.

“However, we urge the Government to reconsider the introduction of a mandatory register for electricians which would result in competency on the doorstep, to ensure all professionals carrying out electrical work in the home are fully trained. This is something the NAPIT Trade Association have been advocating since our inception in 1992 and something many consumers would expect when hiring an electrician.

“This would help to ensure householders are safe, and would also make using a registered, competent electrician a legal requirement, removing the confusion currently experienced by consumers about exactly what is required for Building Regulation compliance. It would also improve enforcement of Part P, as all those carrying out notifiable electrical work in the home will be able to self-certify the work they do complies with the Building Regulations.

“We hope the Government’s discussion with industry will encourage them to reconsider introducing competency on the doorstep for all electrical installers carrying out work in dwellings in England.”
