NAPIT is a leading Government approved and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited membership scheme operator in the building services and fabric sector. There are currently more than 18,000+ NAPIT registered installers in the electrical, heating, plumbing, ventilation, microgeneration and building fabric trades across the UK domestic, commercial and industrial markets.

NAPIT membership schemes are operated by NAPIT Registration and NAPIT Certification, two companies which, along with other supporting NAPIT divisions, form the NAPIT Group. The companies within this rapidly expanding group – which include NAPIT Training, the NAPIT Trade Association, NAPIT Inspection, NAPIT Services, NAPIT Insurance and NAPIT Legal – work together to provide seamless routes to trade competence.

NAPIT History

1992

The National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT) was formed as a Trade Association.
2004

Following the introduction of Part P of the Building Regulations, in 2004, NAPIT was authorised to operate Electrical Competent Person Schemes (CPS) under Full Scope and Defined Scope.
2005

NAPIT Training was launched delivering a comprehensive portfolio of its own training and assessment in addition to industry approved courses.
2005

NAPIT was authorised to offer the TrustMark scheme to NAPIT Installers.
2005

A bespoke insurance package for installers was launched under a new NAPIT Insurance brand.
2006

Plumbing, heating and ventilation were added to the list of Competent Person Schemes NAPIT are authorised to operate, for installers whose work falls under Parts F, G, H and L of the Building Regulations.
2007

A free legal advice service was set up for NAPIT Installers under the NAPIT Legal brand.
2009

NAPIT’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) was launched, following accreditation from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
2012

NAPIT gained UKAS accreditation to certify Installers who wished to work under the Green Deal.
2013

NAPIT's Competent Person Schemes were extended again to include doors, windows and insulation.
2014

MHCLG authorised NAPIT to run a Third Party Certification scheme for electrical installations.

The Trade Association played a key role in the establishment of a single register for all full scope electricians registered with an MHCLG-authorised Competent Person Scheme Operator in England and Wales. The register was also made available online at www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk.

NAPIT Trade Association

Continued to lobby Government for a better industry through NAPIT Trade Association campaigns and The Electrical Safety Roundtable (ESR). Sponsored and supported the publication of a report by the ESR highlighting the low level of enforcement of Part P of the Building Regulations in England.
Released a series of infographics designed to highlight the day-to-day concerns of registered tradespeople to MPs and influential organisations across the building services sector.

NAPIT Training

Gained authorisation to be a City & Guilds Accredited Training Provider and expanded the NAPIT Training brand adding with additional accredited satellite centres around the UK.

The City & Guilds Accredited Competence in the Installation and Testing of Electrotechnical Systems NA-7232-(5) programme was developed.

NAPIT Electrical Inspector Scheme

NAPIT’s Electrical Inspector Scheme was launched to promote the specialism of Members to domestic commercial and industrial customers.

Michael Collinge continues to expand training with a range of new centres and courses celebrating 12 programmes being approved by City & Guilds Accredited.

Temporary Electrical Systems

A Temporary Electrical Systems membership scheme and training course was introduced offering installers the opportunity to enter a new area of the electrical industry.

NAPIT Mobile

NAPIT Mobile was announced in 2017, which is specifically designed for NAPIT members to certify their work on the move a mobile or tablet.

Premier Training Academy

Premier Training Academy was launched and approved by NAPIT Training.
In 2016, Premier Training Academy also certified 260 candidates under City & Guilds Accredited Competence in the Installation and Testing of Electrotechnical System PTA-7232-(5).

NAPIT Trade Association

Introduced regular webinars for members, allowing them to find out more detail about technical topics and ask questions to the experts from the comfort of their own home.
2018

NAPIT celebrates 25th Anniversary

NAPIT was founded 25 years ago by a small group of electricians whose aim was to improve the standards within the electrical industry.

It started with six staff members campaigning persistently at the local and national level, to introduce a system where electricians and electrical inspectors and testers could be certified as competent.

With a membership of more than 10,000 NAPIT registered businesses operating across the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors, complemented by a national network of training centres, NAPIT continues to uphold its ethos, to underpin and promote continual professional development (CPD) through training and assessment.

EICR Codebreakers book published

NAPIT’s first publication and the only definitive guide of its kind, EICR Codebreakers is essential for anyone carrying out EICRs and facing what’s arguably the most difficult decision; what code to give an observation.

It has received a great response from the industry and is a must have guide for any electrician carrying out inspections.

NAPIT Trade Association

After years of campaigning for electrical checks to be made mandatory in the Private Rented Sector, the Government announced that these inspections would be introduced, with landlords required to ensure they are carried out every five years.

Released updated versions of its campaign infographics to reflect changes in the renewable energy sector and relating to the enforcement of Part P of the Building Regulations.

NAPIT Endorse SPARKSAFE LTP

NAPIT announce the support of SparkSafe LtP (Licence to Practise) to provide increased levels of assurance to clients relating to the qualifications and competence of individuals within the UK’s Electrical Contracting industry.

NAPIT ACQUIRES STROMA INSTALLER CERTIFICATION

NAPIT acquires Stroma Installer Certification Limited, the transaction is to strengthen NAPIT’s commitment to continuously raise standards and safety within the construction industry.

Over 3,500 existing Stroma Certification members will continue to be UKAS accredited under a new certification body named Stroma Installer Certification Limited.

ON-SITE SOLUTIONS

NAPIT launch On-site Solutions – Practical Solutions to Electrical Installations in accordance with BS 7671:2018. The publication provides practical and useful solutions for a number of different installation types and gives electrical contractors the knowledge they need to comply with the requirements of BS 7671:2019 The IET Wiring Regulations.

TRAINING REPOSITIONING

Premier Training Academy repositions to NAPIT Training to allow all training services to now operate under one brand. NAPIT Training continues to offer training across the electrical, heating, plumbing, health & safety and renewable sectors with classroom, online and bespoke options available. All training is certified or accredited by City & Guilds, BPEC, LCL, NCFE, EAL.

NEW CERTIFICATE SOFTWARE SOLUTION NAPIT FASTTEST

Trimble MEP and NAPIT have collaborated to develop a new version of FastTest, a certificate software solution for commercial, industrial, and domestic electrical installations used across a range of sectors within the building services industry. Rather than retire the Trimble version of FastTest, Trimble have chosen to provide an option for their customers to migrate to the next generation of certification software, NAPIT FastTest.
